Choosing Thoughts that Lift Us Instead of Weighing Us Down
“No longer can I hold on to some ancient memory. That runs me ’round in circles and will not let me be.” sings Maggie Longmire, a powerful singer-songwriter from East Tennessee.
In Maggie’s song “Lay It Down” (quoted above), she sings about the anger, resentment, and hard feelings that she (and we all) sometimes holds onto, carrying them around and being weighted down by them. In the song she has chosen to “lay it down,” refusing to carry these emotional burdens (which of course impact us physically as well) any longer.
Though anger and resentment are some of the heaviest thought burdens we can saddle ourselves with, there are plenty of other weights we place on ourselves with the thoughts we choose to think. Do you want to lose 20 pounds? Would you like to feel lighter than you do right now? Here are 4 simple steps to help you do precisely that:
- Take time to examine your thoughts.
- Determine if they’re adding labor to your heart and life or lifting you so that it feels as if you’re effortlessly breezing through life.
- Choose which thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes you’re ready to jettison from your pack.
- Heighten your awareness to notice any times those old thoughts try to sneak their way back into your life. Dump them early so they’ll begin to get the picture that they’re no longer welcome companions in your life’s travels.
