Consciousness — What are you thinking about anyway?

“Every thought you have makes up some segment of the world you see. It is with your thoughts, then, that we must work, if your perception of the world is to be changed. Nothing but your own thoughts can hamper your progress.”

~A Course in Miracles

Many of us seem to know that our thoughts are one of the strongest determinants of the reality we experience, yet somehow we often appear to simply know this rather than practicing it. We must take the time to examine our thoughts and search for unconscious beliefs so that we’ll know if they’re serving or sabotaging us. Let me offer an example from my own life.

A year ago I was preparing to co-lead a workshop on creating a healthy relationship with money when I discovered a belief that certainly could have tripped me up (and likely did up until I decided to change it). The thought which popped into my consciousness was, “Rich people are Republicans.” A minute later I began a frantic conversation in my mind. “I know I don’t want to be a Republican.” (at least how they now are as a US political party) “But if I think that you have to be a Rep. to be rich and I know I don’t want to be a Rep., then I’m shutting the door on being rich as well.” YIKES! So, while I’ve done a lot of work with my beliefs around money, here was one I hadn’t yet discovered which was potentially putting an iron gate in front of the financial abundance path that wanted to lead its way straight to my life.

So I strongly encourage you to start examining your thoughts and looking for those beliefs that are running in the background of your mind’s operating system. Are they helping you create the life you want for yourself or are they infecting your consciousness with their maliciousness? If you want to change your life for the better–financially, in relationships, career-wise, for your health–then you would be wise to take time out to find out what thoughts are running through your head and change any that aren’t serving you in a powerfully positive way.
